Cryotherapy (CryoPen)
What Is Cryotherapy & How Does the Treatment Work?
Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a CryoPen, an innovative device that is designed to directly target lesions such as warts, skin tags, and aged spots by not touching the surrounding tissue, thanks to its applicator tip.
The treatment works by delivering nitrous (N2O) at a much colder temperature and higher pressure than traditional cryo sprays.
Making removal fast, effective, and accurate, CryoPen treatments are expected to result in a quick recovery, with most clients healing between 7 and 10 days.
What To Expect in Your Treatment
- First Freeze Cycle: Our experienced therapist will hold the applicator as close to the lesion as possible, then apply bursts of N2O to the area. The treatment duration is dependent on the lesion size and depth, which usually lasts between 1 and 30 seconds.
- Thaw: After the first freezing cycle, the treated area is left to thaw for around 30 seconds.
- Second Freeze Cycle: The second freeze cycle will start after the thaw phase. The tissue will then freeze faster than in the first freezing cycle.

Common Treatment FAQ's
-
How Safe Is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is considered a safe and low-risk treatment. The CryoPen is designed to only target the lesion, leaving the surrounding healthy tissue untouched. The CryoPen is also both CE and FDA registered, giving our clients peace of mind with the treatment.
-
Will the Treatment Be Painful?
Most clients will experience minimal discomfort or a stinging sensation after the treatment. Usually, the pain sensation is described as a ballpoint pen being pushed onto the skin when the N2O reaches the base of the lesion.
-
Are There Any Follow up Sessions?
It is recommended to book a follow up visit 2-4 weeks after your treatment to ensure the lesion has completely been removed and healed properly. Get in touch with the team at Tranquillo Beauty to schedule a follow up appointment.
-
Are There Any Side Effects for This Treatment?
As cryotherapy is a low-risk procedure, a few side effects may occur after your treatment, which can include. Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation which causes temporary changes in skin tone. If a nerve lies close to the treatment area, there is a chance that this can cause nerve damage, but it is generally considered quite rare. Frozen N2O released during the procedure can result in small ice shards that can be released during treatment, but will thaw immediately upon contact with healthy skin. Lastly, temporary or permanent hair loss will occur when treating areas with coarse terminal hair.
-
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
Typically, only one session is required. However, for more challenging lesions, 2-3 sessions may be recommended.
-
Is Cryotherapy Suitable for Darker Skin Tones?
Cryotherapy can be used on darker skin tones. However, we recommend shorter freezing cycles of 3 to 6 seconds, with treatments spaced at 2 week intervals for safe and optimal results.
